From Childhood Dreams to Ta Prohm’s Reality

For many travelers, Ta Prohm is far more than an ancient Cambodian temple it is a place where memories, dreams, and reality converge. For me, visiting Ta Prohm was not just about admiring a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but about reliving a piece of my own childhood.
Growing up, the Tomb Raider video game on PlayStation 1 was more than entertainment it was an escape into a world of mystery, challenge, and discovery. I spent countless hours guiding Lara Croft through dangerous ruins, solving puzzles, and imagining what it would feel like to walk inside such forgotten temples. When the game was later adapted into the Tomb Raider movie, starring Angelina Jolie, the fantasy grew even stronger. Watching the film’s breathtaking scenes set in Cambodia especially at Ta Prohm made the dream feel almost within reach.
Years later, standing in Siem Reap and stepping inside Ta Prohm itself, I felt that dream finally come alive. The temple’s massive tree roots wrapped around weathered stone walls seemed exactly like the digital landscapes of my childhood, except this time the sounds of birds, the smell of moss, and the touch of ancient carvings grounded me in reality. Walking through the temple’s shaded corridors was surreal, like stepping inside both a memory and a movie scene at once.
Visiting Ta Prohm was more than sightseeing it was an emotional journey back in time, a reminder of the wonder and imagination that shaped my youth. For any traveler, especially fans of Tomb Raider or seekers of unique travel experiences in Cambodia, Ta Prohm is not just a monument of history, but a living bridge between childhood dreams and unforgettable reality.
History of Ta Prohm When Jungle and Temple Become One

Built in the late 12th century, during the reign of the Khmer King Jayavarman VII, Ta Prohm was originally known as Rajavihara the “royal monastery.” Constructed circa 1186 AD, it served as a grand Buddhist monastic complex, dedicated to the mother of the king. The temple featured galleries, libraries, and sanctuaries adorned with sculptures of devatas, garudas, and sacred motifs consistent with Bayon-style architecture.
After Jayavarman VII’s reign ended, successive rulers gradually shifted the empire back toward Hindu worship. Over the centuries, the Khmer Empire declined, Buddhist monastic orders receded, and the temple was abandoned. Dense tropical forest enveloped it. Massive Tetrameles nudiflora and Strangler fig trees rooted deeply in the temple’s sandstone. As the jungle grew, roots lifted stones, cracked walls, and gradually turned the temple itself into an artful ruin entwined with living trees.

Ta Prohm lay largely untouched until the French-led École Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) began restoration in the early 20th century. Rather than fully clearing the canopy, they chose to preserve the dramatic state of ruin where temple and tree were inseparable. Today, Ta Prohm is celebrated not only for its historical significance but for the way it showcases both the power and fragility of human creations and nature’s force.
In recent decades, international media amplified Ta Prohm’s fame, especially after it featured in the film Tomb Raider (2001), where Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft explores its eerie corridors. The film introduced millions to the aesthetic of vines and roots embracing stone. While the temple existed long before this Hollywood moment, the popularity spike remains undeniable making it one of the most visited sites in Cambodia.
